Story Mining Welcomes a “New” Offering

The methodology behind Story Mining is derived from one source – the journal I kept during my abusive marriage. The lessons I learned, the wisdom I gleaned, and the glimpses of my true self I discovered through writing in it are baked into the DNA of Story Mining. So when I built the first manifestation of Story Mining, The Mini Dig, all that insight showed up in the seven reflections that are its core.

I’ve been working on a new Story Mining offering for clinicians to employ as a reflective resource in their therapeutic practices. To make it a more broadly useful tool, I built a new version of The Mini Dig that – while containing the same reflections – has more generalized language, so it’s applicable to a wider array of clients. I matched that version with a Clinician’s Guide and a Session Companion to make a truly complete resource bundle.

The rationale behind generalizing The Mini Dig this way works because the three forces underneath all of it – control, danger, chaos – are not specific to a marriage. That underlying mechanism, the one that conspires to keep a person from having room to become themselves, shows up in more places than just an intimate relationship. It’s just as real in a controlling parent’s house, in a workplace run by real fear, in a group or a friendship where stepping out of line carried real consequences.

Having compiled the clinician’s offering, it occurred to me that since nothing about that broader version of The Mini Dig it uses actually requires a clinician to be present, that it could be every bit as much a self-paced, do-it-yourself tool as the original; indeed, that “new” version constituted another product under the Story Mining umbrella entirely on its own.

So now, I have three offerings in total:

• The Mini Dig – for women after, or within, an abusive relationship
• The Mini Dig – for anyone after, or within, a controlling or harmful relationship
• The Clinician’s Package – the general Mini Dig, paired with a full Clinician’s Guide and Session Companion
